The Building Physics Values of Windows and Doors and Their Significance

Doors and windows, as some of the most crucial elements of buildings, significantly impact energy efficiency, comfort, and the internal climate. In this blog post, we will detail the physical properties of doors and windows and their importance.

Heat Transfer Coefficient (U-Value)

The heat transfer coefficient, or U-value, indicates how much heat the door or window lets through. The lower the U-value, the better the thermal insulation. The U-value is measured in W/m²K (watts per square meter kelvin). Doors and windows with a low U-value help reduce heating and cooling costs and improve the building's energy efficiency.

When choosing doors and windows, you may encounter three different U-values: Ug, Uf, and Uw. These parameters describe different components of the heat transfer coefficient, which together determine the overall thermal insulation capacity of the door or window.

The Ug value is the heat transfer coefficient of the glazing, indicating how much heat the glass lets through. Since the glass is the largest surface area in a window, most heat loss occurs here. The Ug value can be reduced with double or triple glazing, special coatings, and filling the gaps with special gases like argon.

The Uf value represents the heat transfer coefficient of the window frame. Here, it's also essential that the value be as low as possible, primarily achieved through air chambers within the profile—the more chambers, the better. Influencing factors include the frame material (wood, plastic, aluminum) and the quality of the rubber seals.

The Uw value is the heat transfer coefficient of the entire window. It provides an overall picture of the window's thermal insulation capacity, making it the most critical metric to consider when selecting doors and windows.

Sound Insulation (Rw-Value)

The sound insulation capacity of doors and windows is indicated by the Rw value, measured in decibels (dB). The higher the Rw value, the better the sound insulation of the door or window. This is particularly important in noisy environments, such as near busy roads or railway lines.

High Rw value doors and windows reduce external noise, improving the acoustic comfort of the interior. Reducing noise pollution positively affects health and well-being, lowering stress and improving sleep quality.

Air Permeability

Air permeability of doors and windows plays a crucial role in the energy efficiency and comfort of buildings. The air permeability is regulated by the MSZ 9333 standard, which defines various classes for the air tightness, wind resistance, and water tightness of doors and windows. The classification of air permeability is based on the pressure difference, measured in Pascals (Pa). The appropriate class selection depends on the building's location and the position of the door or window. Several solutions are available to reduce the air permeability of doors and windows, such as the use of seals, higher quality materials, and proper installation techniques. These all contribute to better thermal and sound insulation, as well as increased energy efficiency.

 

When selecting and installing doors and windows, many physical aspects must be considered to ensure optimal energy efficiency, comfort, and durability. The U-value, air permeability, sound insulation, light transmission, and vapor diffusion properties are all crucial for choosing the right doors and windows.
